Above the Clouds in Cloudcroft, New Mexico

9000 feet above street level is the cozy mountain village, Cloudcroft. I was able to visit this town early morning before things were open, however it was nothing like I had visited before. One main street that runs from Riudoso down the mountain to Alamogordo, New Mexico. This little town has shops, restaurants and unique businesses to visit, a museum filled with the logging and railroad history of the area as well as unique events scheduled all year long! With the population only being 713, it never usually gets crowded, even in the busy summer months. Before visiting, I heard that a must stop for breakfast is the Western bar and Café. Apparently their pancakes are as big as the plate it is served on. Unfortunately when I visited, they were closed, so I went across the street to Burro Avenue.

Burro Avenue is a rustic little bakery that is known for their pies. I ordered a sausage burrito and an iced coffee with vanilla. It was definitely delicious and hit the spot. They also have a souvenir section in the bakery to snag Cloudcroft take away!

As you start to make your way down the mountain towards Alamogordo, New Mexico, you have to make a pit stop at the Old Apple Barn! They are known for their Pecan pie and fudge, so you best believe I snagged a slice.

During the day the weather is usually in the low 80s and at night it dropped to the high 60s. It’s a year round destination with something to do in every season. However, if you are planning to camp in Lincoln National Forest, the lows do get in the 50s so be prepared and bring an umbrella since scattered showers are very frequent. The next time you are passing through New Mexico be sure to stop in Cloudcroft!
