Discover the Charm of Charleston: An Epic Getaway

I grew up about two hours from Charleston, South Carolina. It has always been one of my favorite vacation spots with plenty to see and amazing food to eat. This year I have finally been able to go back to Charleston after 10 years. Check out a few places that I have been able to re-visit!

Getting Around

With its proximity to the airport, you can easily catch an Uber or Lyft, but to truly experience everything, I recommend renting a car. Venture outside of the city to explore the stunning plantations, beautiful beaches, and great outlet malls. Discovering Charleston is a breeze, even without a rental car. Once you're downtown, the city offers an array of transportation options including bike rentals, bike taxis, carriage horse rides, and Uber.

WHICH PLANTATION SHOULD YOU VISIT IN CHARLESTON?

After spending time at a few different plantations, I have come to the conclusion that Boone Hall stands out as the best overall experience. What makes it particularly special is the range of activities it offers, from tours of the historic house and gardens to demonstrations by skilled craftsmen and women. The plantation also hosts various events throughout the year, such as concerts and festivals, which add to the festive atmosphere.

If you plan on visiting any of the plantations, I would strongly recommend allowing for a full day to explore everything fully. This will give you enough time to truly appreciate all the fascinating history and natural beauty that these sites have to offer, without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Boone Hall Plantation was founded in 1681 and is one of the oldest plantations around Charleston. You might recognize the main house from many movies like the Notebook and North and South. You can take a tour through the main house, the grounds, and many more.

Middleton Place began in the 1740s when Mary Williams inherited Middleton Place. History will come alive at the Middleton Place. They feature costumed craftspeople showcasing life on the plantation from the time of its inception in 1738.

Magnolia Plantation was founded in the 17th century by the Drayton family and the gardens opened to the public following the Civil War in the early 1870s. Magnolia showcases the natural beauty of the lowcountry through winding nature trails and Romantic-style gardens.

McLeod Plantation stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Charleston, dating back to 1851. This historic plantation is the closest to the heart of downtown Charleston, showcasing its visitors an incredible glimpse into the past.

DRINKS & DINNING

I enjoy exploring new cuisine and finding hidden gems. Here are some of the places we discovered on our last trip to Charleston.

STAYS IN CHARLESTON

I enjoy beach getaways, and the accommodations make all the difference! Here are a few places I have stayed and thoroughly enjoyed.

The Palmetto Hotel

I love this stylish hotel situated in the heart of Downtown Charleston, only one block from the Market. They offer complimentary bike rentals, breakfast every morning, and are pet-friendly!

The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina

This resort is perfect if you are looking to escape and unwind by the pool. The resort has two pools, a hot tub, and dining options on-site. I highly recommend getting a balcony with a pool view, as you will overlook the harbor and get to enjoy watching the sunset while boats go by.

Shem Creek Inn

This hidden inn is located in Shem Creek and sits right on the water. Perfect for a more laid-back trip with restaurants within walking distance.
